Description

This turritella fossil agate pendant was made and donated by Scott Schmir. Turritella is an easily recognized agate because of its striking beige and brown snail fossils. Although known as turritella, this stone is actually composed of fossils of the freshwater snail, Elimia tenera, a member of the Pleuroceridae family. When this stone was first discovered in the Green River Formation in Wyoming, it was thought that the spiral-shaped gastropod (snail) fossils entombed within the stone were members of the marine Turritella genus. This stone has become so popular that turritella is the widely accepted name.
